It all started with a simple date night. Sara and I were
trying to decide what to do for our double date. We had a few different ideas but Sara heard
about the #amazingmoccrace on Friday at 6:00 pm. On Friday afternoon we decided we would check
out the race and looked up the addresses of different locations in downtown
Provo. We printed out the addresses of
popular sites and eateries in the downtown area. Around 5:00 we picked up the Ortons and
headed to Sammy’s to get dinner before the race. Dinner before the race sounded like a great
idea until we didn’t get our burgers at 5:50 pm. Although we were nervous about the race we
still ate our burgers and fries willingly. Our plan was to split up if we could
and try to win as a team.
The race started on top of a parking garage on 100 W. 100 N.
in Provo. We brought our fries with us
and waited to hear instructions. The
organizers gave a few precautions and @freshlypicked, Susan, welcomed everyone
and gave a general run down of the race.
She said there were four different locations around Provo where we would
have to get stamps and perform some activity. Susan also mentioned there would be two
different routes within the race. Sara
and I pushed our way to the front of the 100+ crowd with our husbands standing
behind. Susan gave the first clue over
the microphone so everyone could hear.
She said something like “Here is the best soda in town...” Sara knew
right away that the clue was at Sodalicious on 300 N. 50 W. We sprinted to the
stairs and headed down as quickly as possible. Ben and Spencer were right behind us and Ben
directed us to take University Avenue.
There was one guy ahead of Spencer and me but we ended up arriving at
Sodalicious about the same time. We were
told to take a selfie at the first location, so that was the first thing I
did. Then the lady handed me a paper and
I read it as I started off running again.
The paper said something about going to a performance location
and I wasn’t exactly sure where it wanted me to go. Ben caught up with me and said “Communal.” Luckily his paper had the clue to the other
route, which was much more straightforward.
We ran to Communal, a restaurant on University Avenue. As I ran to the crosswalk Ben darted across
traffic. He yelled at me to cross as
well, but I was too nervous. I got to
the crosswalk, pushed the button, and luckily triggered the light to turn
red. I sprinted across the crosswalk to
find Ben and another guy wearing skirts. They asked us to put on skirts and do 5 “can-can”
kicks, which I proceeded to do as quickly as possible. I asked for the next stamp, was given another
paper clue and saw the word “pizza.”
When we were on the rooftop waiting for the instructions before the race
I randomly noticed a sign for Two Jack’s Pizza.
I mentioned something about it to the others, thinking nothing of
it. The word “pizza” on the third clue
was talking about Two Jack’s Pizza, so we headed that way. I was holding my phone in my hand this whole
time and saw I had a missed call from Sara.
I quickly called her as we were heading to Two Jack’s. She was on the other side of the street that
we needed to get across so I told her to go to the pizza place as fast as
possible. Ben and I got to the crosswalk
and noticed the do not walk sign blinked in red. The cars’ had the right away but Ben walked
right into the road. There weren’t cars
coming north so he thought we would wait in the middle. The cars slammed their brakes and honked at
as, ultimately allowing us to cross through the other side of traffic as well. I was in the lead and arrived at Two Jack’s
first where they asked me to do ten jumping jacks. I quickly did so and grabbed the last clue
out of the man’s hand. I saw the word “pie
shake” and ran a block west and turned the corner to find my destination. I didn’t see any distinct finish line or red
tape. In merely ten seconds I panicked,
looking inside the restaurant itself, around the corner and back to the
street. Just then a bearded man came out
and said “are you done?” I shouted “YES,
yes I’m the first one here.” He quickly
took a picture of me on his phone, as well as Ben and the other guy that was at
Communal.
The bearded man asked me if I
had taken a selfie and I confirmed. Sara
was all of a sudden next to me and grabbed my phone. She quickly posted my selfie on Instagram in
order to clarify that we had been to the first location and followed the
instructions. A few minutes later the
rest of the crowd followed in wondering where the prizes were and what came
next. I stood there talking to Ben and
Sara about what had happened. CJane
Kendrick came up and congratulated me and asked if I had any children. I told her about William and she asked how I
finished so quickly. We chit chatted for
a few minutes, got some pictures and then I was awarded a black carry-all tote
with 15 pair of moccasins inside. My
heart was pounding as it all did not seem real.
Sara and I were talking about how incredible it would be to actually win
the race, not thinking it was actually possible. CJane’s photographer took me aside and took
some individual photos of me as I posed with my new purse. The crowd died down and they left us alone as
we still couldn’t believe what just happened.
The purse retails at $240 and the moccasins are $60 each. We had planned to go golfing at the driving
range afterward so we headed that way. In the back seat of our car, one by one Sara
and I took out each pair of shoes and gasped at their beauty. We felt like the luckiest moms alive. We didn’t do much golfing to say the least,
but kept reliving the race and its details.
Sara and I split the shoes and are beyond lucky to have claimed them
ours. The race was such a fun memory, we
will never forget it! Be sure to check out Freshly Picked and her website with all of the gorgeous purses and moccasins.
